Anthony Smith's wonderful bronze statue of Wallace (right) which the Wallace Memorial Fund gifted to London's Natural History Museum has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2014 Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture. The Award is offered for a sculpture installed in a public place within the last two years. It acknowledges and commends excellence, increases awareness and discussion of public sculpture and celebrates new work that demonstrates originality, aesthetic quality and sensitivity to its site. - See more at: http://www.pmsa.org.uk/marsh-award/marsh-awards-2014/#sthash.0Xxk6FK8.dpuf
The Fund commissioned the statue to commemorate the centenary of Wallace's death on 7th November 2013 and it was unveiled on that exact date by none other than the great naturalist Sir David Attenborough. A video of the unveiling ceremony and Sir David's passionate speech can be seen on YouTube HERE.
Anthony must be one of the few people to be shortlisted twice for Marsh Award - his statue of the young Charles Darwin (at Christ's College, Cambridge) was shortlisted in 2009.
