Revision of Plants and animals named after Wallace from Wed, 2014-12-31 00:25

By George Beccaloni

A large number of species have been (and are still being) named after Wallace (usually as wallacii or wallacei), often based on specimens he collected in Brazil and Southeast Asia. The Index to Organism Names (ION) lists over 700 species names which start with "wallac", but in order to be sure that a species was named after him and not another person with the same surname, it is necessary to read the published species description (which is often difficult to obtain). Please note that the list below is incomplete. Also note that an "*" before a name means that the species was NOT described from specimens Wallace collected. For more information about the specimens collected by Wallace in the Malay Archipelago see the following paper by Baker in 2001: CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE PDF A very good paper assessing Wallace's contributions to south-east Asian ornithology, which contains a list of the species and subspecies of birds named after him is available as a pdf HERE
